EV Charging Hits High Gear in Australia

Australia’s electric vehicle charging market is entering a new stage of growth following one of its most consequential infrastructure deals. In April 2025, EVSE completed its acquisition of ENGIE’s Australian and New Zealand charging network, adding more than 200 sites to its portfolio and reinforcing its role in the country’s transition toward clean mobility.

The purchase extends EVSE’s presence across high-traffic commercial destinations, including Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre and Sydney’s Chatswood Chase. These hubs are becoming new-style refueling points where drivers can charge vehicles while shopping or dining, a model reshaping convenience for an emerging generation of EV users.

By integrating ENGIE’s sites into its Exploren platform, EVSE aims to unify Australia’s charging infrastructure under a single digital network. The platform allows drivers to locate, access, and pay for charging through one system, reducing duplication and speeding installation in areas with fast-rising demand. Analysts said the move signals a broader consolidation as the market matures beyond isolated pilot projects.

“The market is maturing quickly,” said one energy infrastructure expert. “We’re seeing companies pivot from testing to scaling, delivering the reliability and reach that will define the next stage of EV adoption.” Such scaling efforts align with national targets to achieve net-zero emissions by midcentury and with federal programs designed to make public charging universally available by 2050.

For businesses, the rise of large-scale operators like EVSE is redefining partnerships with landlords, retailers, and fleet managers. For consumers, it promises faster charging, wider coverage, and fewer compatibility issues.

Challenges remain in extending infrastructure to regional and remote areas, where access still lags behind major cities. Yet the momentum is clear. As EV ownership accelerates and public interest in clean mobility grows, EVSE’s expansion marks a decisive step toward an electrified transport landscape, one driven by scale, innovation, and accessibility.
