Australia’s electric future just got a little closer and a lot cheaper. Energy provider AGL has joined forces with bp pulse to offer discounted charging for electric vehicles, a move set to ease one of the biggest friction points for would-be EV drivers: cost.

Announced in June, the partnership gives AGL electricity customers a 6 cent per kilowatt-hour discount when using bp pulse’s growing national network. With more than 220 charging stations across six states and territories, the deal makes it cheaper and easier to plug in and power up.

The discount can be activated via the AGL app, allowing customers to start saving immediately. It’s a small tweak with big implications, especially as more Australians eye EVs but remain wary of price tags and patchy infrastructure.

“This partnership creates real value for EV drivers,” an AGL spokesperson said. “It lowers charging costs when affordability is key to encouraging adoption.” bp pulse, for its part, pointed to the benefit of higher charger use, which can fuel further investment in fast-charging tech.

But this isn't just about shaving a few cents off the electricity bill. It’s a glimpse into the growing convergence between the energy and transport sectors. For AGL, it’s a customer retention play that deepens its stake in a transforming mobility market. For bp pulse, it’s access to a broader pool of EV users and more reasons for drivers to choose its chargers.

The announcement rides a broader wave of momentum. New South Wales alone has pledged $149 million to fund nearly 275 fast and ultra-fast charging stations across the state. Public and private initiatives are expanding the network. Partnerships like AGL and bp pulse’s are making sure Australians can actually afford to use it.

Some critics question whether these kinds of deals might exclude non-customers. But both companies insist the program is additive, not restrictive.

With EV sales climbing and charging infrastructure fast becoming a competitive frontier, expect more deals like this. The battle for Australia’s EV future won’t just be about where to plug in. It will be about who makes plugging in easiest on the wallet.
