Charging Ahead: Inside Australia’s Electric Boom

Australia’s electric vehicle charging industry is shifting gears fast. With a surge of funding, forward-thinking policy, and private-sector creativity, the nation is accelerating toward a cleaner and more connected transport network.

Evie Networks is leading the charge after securing a A$50 million infrastructure loan from Infradebt. Once viewed as a speculative play, EV charging is now treated as a long-term infrastructure investment. Evie plans to use the new capital to expand fast-charging sites along highways and into regional towns, tightening the country’s electric grid.

At the same time, JOLT is rewriting the rules for public charging. Its model offers drivers up to 7 kWh of free daily power, supported by digital ads displayed on charging kiosks. The idea blends sustainability with smart business and makes EV use more practical for city residents without home chargers. “We’re not just building chargers, we’re building access,” a JOLT spokesperson said, noting that local councils and developers are lining up to collaborate.

Meanwhile, Mondo is steering the movement into heavy transport. In partnership with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, it is building the nation’s first shared electric truck charging hub in Melbourne. The pilot will test how logistics operators can share high-capacity infrastructure, potentially setting the stage for wider electrification of freight.

Canberra is backing this momentum with a $40 million public charging package designed to align public funding with private investment. “This is the moment where private capital and public policy are finally aligning,” said energy analyst Rebecca Huang.

Challenges around grid access and regulation persist, but the direction is clear. With steady investment and coordination, Australia’s road to electrification no longer looks distant; it is already buzzing to life.
