Solar powered Tesla Supercharger station in New South Wales

Tesla has launched its most advanced solar-powered Supercharger station in Australia, marking a step forward in the company’s attempt to merge electric vehicle infrastructure with renewable energy.

Located in New Italy, New South Wales, the site includes a 12-bay Supercharger fitted with an 80kW solar canopy and an on-site battery system. Positioned along the busy Sydney to Brisbane corridor, the station is designed to serve both passenger cars and larger vehicles, with a dedicated bay for caravans and trailers.

The solar array generates power for lighting and cooling systems, while surplus energy is stored in the battery. This allows the site to reduce its draw from the main electricity grid, particularly during periods of high demand. Tesla said the station offers “greater energy efficiency and resilience” than conventional charging points.

The initiative follows the installation of a similar solar-powered station in Raymond Terrace, north of Sydney. Tesla plans to expand the model across Australia, with additional locations identified in regional Queensland.

Though solar integration involves higher upfront costs, operators point to lower running expenses over time, as well as improved grid independence and access to clean energy subsidies. “Tesla’s latest station is more than a charging hub; it is a sustainable energy node,” the company said.

Analysts say that widespread adoption of solar-supported charging infrastructure could reduce emissions, improve network reliability, and deliver long-term savings for consumers.

Australia has one of the world’s highest rooftop solar penetrations, but transport electrification remains a bottleneck in reducing the country’s overall carbon footprint. Charging infrastructure that draws directly from renewable sources could help accelerate that transition.
