Australia’s electric vehicle charging scene is shifting gears. Cloud technology is quietly reshaping how chargers are managed, monitored, and maintained across the country.

As charging stations spread from cities to highways, operators are embracing cloud systems that connect every unit online. This allows networks to be tracked and controlled in real time from a central hub, while data insights help improve efficiency and reliability.

Analysts point to rising EV adoption, smarter energy management, and closer ties to renewables as key reasons for the surge in cloud-managed charging. Research from 6Wresearch suggests these systems are already helping operators cut downtime and streamline performance, even if full market data remains behind paywalls.

Two Australian players are leading the charge. EV Hub’s Smart Charge platform gives operators a live dashboard to monitor performance and manage users, while drivers can locate and pay for charging through a mobile app. Everty, now part of AGL following its January 2025 acquisition, offers a platform compatible with various charger brands, helping businesses oversee multiple sites at once.

Both systems feature automatic fault detection, pricing tools, and energy management software that reduce costs and increase uptime. Their greatest strength lies in scale: hundreds of chargers can be run remotely without on-site staff. With access to usage data, operators can forecast maintenance, balance grid demand, and time charging to match cheaper or cleaner power.

Still, challenges remain. Many older stations struggle with new software, rural areas often face spotty internet, and cybersecurity risks grow as networks expand online.

Even so, cloud-based charging looks set to become the backbone of Australia’s electric transport future. For companies willing to plug in early, the payoff could be smoother operations, happier drivers, and a system ready for the renewable era.
